On the ‘Thinking person’s game show’ Jeopardy tonight, Lord of the Flies really seemed to get people talking about the novel.
The short novel Lord Of The Flies by William Golding is about a group of school boys, stranded on a deserted island, and what happens to them.
The group becomes lost at first, with no leader, and as young as they were, they were looking for someone to step up and take control.
The problems begin when one boy takes it upon himself to take charge, and sets down rules.
As they came from a rigid school, they soon adopted the same types of conduct, but without an adult to temper their behavior.
The story has withstood the test of time, and has become a part of mandatory reading in almost all of American schools.
It is a cautionary tale, with elements of wisdom, pathos, deliberate cruelty, and insight into who we really are underneath the thin veneer of civility.
The question on Jeopardy caused a flurry of questions on the internet regarding the story, many younger people do not know of the book, and became a huge trending topic.
As far as it goes, it is one of the world’s top classic books, leading many to question just how they would act if they were in the same situation, and hoping they would take the high road.
But, as we all know, the higher the standard we hold for ourselves in moments of disaster or chaos, the closer we become to our true selves.
